With close to 700,000 attendees and more than $2 billion in domestic wagers made every year, Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival is one of the biggest events in the country. With three major racecourses in use, there are plenty of races to bet on and a lot of money up for grabs if you know what you’re doing. To help you decide how best to play your hand, here is an overview of the best betting options in the Spring Racing Carnival.
Spring Carnival Horse Racing Betting Options
Perhaps the most popular bet type in the world of horse racing is the simple win bet. Also referred to as ‘betting on the nose’, this type of bet allows the punter to choose the horse that they believe will win the race. If they choose the right horse the payout can be significant.
For those that like to play it a little safer, a place bet offers punters the chance to pick three horses to finish first, second or third. If any of the horses come in the top three then the punter will win the ‘place’ money. One thing to keep in mind though is that the odds are significantly smaller for place bets, which means that even if your horse wins, the payout will be less than with a ‘win’ bet type.
A popular bet type in bigger races, an each way bet is a win and a place bet together. This allows the punter to cash out if any of their horses come in the top three, and get great odds if their horse wins.
Similar to a place bet, a duet bet offers the chance to select two horses, and pays out if they come in the top three in any order.
Popular for punters looking to maximise their chances of winning, the quinella allows them to choose any number of horses to finish in the top two spots in any order. The more horses they pick, however, the smaller the payout.
A variation of the quinella, the trifecta allows punters to choose any number of horses to finish in the top three places, in any order. Each additional horse lowers the dividend.
A bet with a big payout if you get it right, the exacta works by choosing the first two places and the order in which the horses finish. Picking these in the Spring Carnival can be difficult, but seriously rewarding.
